Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou announced this week that (former) Socceroos captain Lucas Neill wouldn’t be in the World Cup squad for this years World Cup In Brazil.
It wasn’t really a surprise, Neill has been in questionable form for a while and has struggled to find a respectable club let alone playing time. He was one of the last standing of the ‘golden generation’ and in the opinion of many, Australia’s best football captain. His socceroo career whilst not officially over but inevitably so, Neill’s contribution to Australian football has been immense, it would be a real shame if he didnt get a proper send off in the green & gold.
Below are two photos from one of his last matches during the World Cup Qualifier against Jordan, in which Neill scored in the 85th minute.
The photo below of Neill walking down the tunnel being congratulated by David Gallop is a personal favourite. This win by the Socceroos was a massive relief for the whole of Football Australia, a loss or even a draw would have put the Socceroos in a very precarious position, potentially seeing the Socceroos not qualify at all. The 4-0 win meant the Socceroos were just one win away from Brazil, much to the relief of David Gallop and the F.F.A Bank balance.
